Bhishma Ashtami

Bhishma Ashtami is the death Anniversary of  Bishma, who was one of the most famous epic in Mahabharata. Bhishma Ashtami is the eighth day of Shukl Paksh on Magh Month according to Hindu Calender.Bhishma the most respected character from Mahabharat who is respected for his honesty, sincerity and determination. Bhishma was known for his loyalty and devotion to his father Pitamah Bhshma and was blessed with boon to choose the time of his death by his own. According to Mahabharata, Bhishma laid himself on the bed of arrows on Magh Shukla Ashtami day. Being injured in Mahabharta Battle he didn’t left his body due to boon and choose Magh Shukla Ashtami to give up his body. This was the time when Surya started moving in Uttarayana.

Bhishma Ashtami is considered as one of the auspicious day, People take bath in the Holly River early in the Morning and observe fast for the whole day. This day has much importance for particular community of peoples. In Bengal special Pooja is conducted on this Day. In the Honour of Bhishma devotees make religious offering of Ganga Water. Sesame seeds and Boiled rice is offered. It is believed that by doing this all the sin are removed out from your Life. Devotees make Arghyam in the evening and do Sankalp.

 Bhishma Ashtami Traditions

  • This day People do Ekodishta Shradhha for Bhishma. This Shradhha is for those who have lost their father. However it is also believed that this Shradhha rituals can be performed by all irrespective of their father being alive or dead.
  • Bhishma Ashtami is celebrated with extreme fervor in Vishnu temples and ISKCON Temples.  People do Bhima Ashtami puja in five days beginning from Bhishma Ashtami to Bhishma Dwadasi are known as Bhishma Panchaka vrata.

Vinayaka Chaturthi 2014

Chaturthi is the Fourth day of each lunar month according to Hindu Calender. It is the day of Lord Ganesha. There are two Chaturthi which arrives in a month.

Sankashti Chaturthi comes after Purnimasi or Full Moon day during Krishna Paksha. Although Vinayak Chaturthi come in Shukla Paksha after new Moon day or Amavasya.

Apart from all Vinayak Chaturthi that falls every month  Bhadrapada chaturthi has much importance. It is also known Varad Vinayaka Chaturthi. Varad means “asking God to fulfill my desire”. Vinayak chaturthi that comes during Navratri is auspicious. To please Lord Ganesha people keep fast on this day and get blssed by wisdom and patience. The wisdom and patience are two assets whose implication is known to human kind since ages. Anyone who owns these virtues can grow in life and can achieve whatever one needs. Vinayaka Chaturthi is done for the duration of afternoon which is midday according to Hindu calendar.

 To do Vinayak Chaturthi Puja people who are fast should wake up early in the morning and after taking bath wear new clothes. Clean up the place of worship in the evening.

Devotees keep Fast throughout the day.
Lord Ganesha is worshipped in the evening.
Darshan of the moon.
Devotees go for darshan to the temple on foot or going on bare feet.
People Recite the Ganesha stotra.
People make Churma Ladoo to offer Lord Ganesha, as Churma Ladoo is one of the favourite dish.
Especially Til ladoos is prepared on Sakat Chauth.
Simply sprinkle water, sandalwood paste, flowers and consecrated rice in the direction of the moon while doing Puja in the night.

Amavasya is the darkest night or no moon night of the month. Mauni Amavasya is the 15th day of the Magh month according to Hindu Calender. It is the day of the conjunction of the sun and the Moon. It is believed that on Mauni Amavasya Rishi Manu appears in this world million years ago. It is the day when sun and Moon enters in the Capricon Sign. People keep fast on this day believing that by doing Moun Vart help us to keep calm our restless mind. On this day people take holly bath in the sacred river,most of the people do meditation at sangam in Prayag.

Shattila Ekadashi Pooja 2014

Shattila Ekadashi is done on the 11th day in the month of Magh, in North India and Paush, in other regions, as per the traditional Hindu calendar.

Ekadashi is the Eleventh Day from Poornima according to Hindu Calender. Shattila Ekadashi is observed in the Magh Month in North India and in the month of Paush in other Regions. Shattila Ekadashi is also known as Sattila Ekadashi or Tilda Ekadashi.

It is also believed that on Shattila Ekadashi People do “Til daan” i.e, they donate til and clothes to needy persons and Bharahmins. Ekadashi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Devotees worships Lord Vishnu with much Devotation. On this day people take bath by mixing sesame seeds in the Water. Mostly Womens keep fast on this Day. Devotees worship Lord Vishnu to get his many blessings to get heaven after death.

 Shattila Ekadashi Story

Once there was a rich woman who is very religious and always do Ekadashi Fast without any fail. She always tries to donate cows and feed meals to Bharamins and hungry people. Once Lord Krishna came I the appearance of a poor Merchant with ragged clothes on Shattila Ekadashi. The mendicant was begging for food, but rich women was not ready to give him food unless he mwntioned his gotra and Place from where he came. The medicant was continually asking for food without listening to the women. The women is gets angry and put some clay in the begging pot.

The mendicant left the place without any complaint. After that Rich Women returned home and was horrified after watching that all food that she had cooked had turned into clay. All foods, fruits in her home became clay.

After watching this rich women become so angry and getting hungry and pale & grew weak day by day. Having much wealth but still she is unable to eat food.

Then she prayed Lord Krishna for many days. One day God Krishna came in her Dream. He said her that Anna Danam is the great Daanam to the hungry people. Hunger don’t know caste, rich or Poor. Do Shittila Ekadashi you will be free from this situation and donate meals to the hungry people.

The women did Sattila ekadashi Fast and donated til to all the Brahmins and fed food to poor and hungry people. Soon after that the entire food item which was converted into clay before was again became real food.

From that day women started donating fod items to poor and Hungry People anytime of the day.
